Maryland for George W. Bush! --Ellen Sauerbrey

Ellen Sauerbrey is a Republican National Committeewoman, former Minority Leader of theMaryland House of Delegates, and former Republican nominee for Governor. She has been a fierce advocate of controlling the size and cost of state government, encouraging economic growth and job creation and promoting crime victims' rights.

Sauerbrey represented her northern Baltimore County district in the House of Delegates from 1978 to 1994. Her outspoken leadership and legislative expertise led fellow Republicans to elect her Minority Leader in 1966 and in each year after.

In the House, Sauerbrey introduced cutting edge legislation to create jobs by cutting taxes and excessive regulations. She was the prime sponsor of the Maryland Spending Affordability Law which has been credited with dramatically curbing the growth of state spending. Her commitment to limited government and economic growth earned her one of the highest cumulative pro-business ratings by Maryland Business for Responsive Government. She sponsored bills to crack down on crime by mandating tougher sentences for violent offenders and restricting parole, probation, and plea bargaining. A former public school teacher, she has advocated greater decision-making power be vested with parents and local communities.

In 1994 and 1998, Sauerbrey was the Republican nominee for Governor. In 1998, she came within four tenths of one percent of Democrat Parris Glendening. Following the election, she became a talk-show host on WEAL radio and a commentator on WBAL TV. Her columns have appeared in the Washington Post, Washington Times, Baltimore Sun, and many other Maryland papers.

Ellen Sauerbrey

Ellen Sauerbrey was the first recipient of the prestigious National Federation of Republican Women's Margaret Chase Smith Award. She has served as the national chair of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) - the largest voluntary membership organization of state legislators - and was a co-founder of the Maryland Taxpayers Coalition, Western Maryland College has honored her as Alumna of the Year, and ALEC has honored her as its Legislator of the Year. She has also received awards from, among others, the Maryland Red Cross, the Maryland Coalition against Crime, and Disabled American Veterans. In 1996, she was elected to the Republican National Committee as the National Conmmitteewoman representing Maryland. She has held leadership positions in many civic groups, including the Council on Economic Education in Maryland and the Franklin Square Hospital.

Born in Baltimore, Sauerbrey graduated from Towson Senior High School and Summa Cum Laude from Western Maryland College. She lives with her husband Wil on a small farm in Sweet Air.
