NEW POLL SHOWS BUSH WINNING REAGAN DEMOCRATS
Key swing groups supporting Bush

AUSTIN - A highly respected and bipartisan poll released today
shows Texas Governor George W. Bush in a strong position for this
November's presidential election.

"The Battleground 2000 poll shows Governor Bush's strength among
voters from every walk of life, especially among Reagan Democrats,
where he holds a commanding 13-point lead." said Bush for
President spokesman Ari Fleischer. "Governor Bush is also leading
among Hispanics, independents, and is tied among Catholics. The
swing voters of this election are responding to Governor Bush's
record of results and his agenda of improving education,
protecting Social Security, rebuilding our national defense,
and providing tax relief."

Digging For Dirt In A Clean Mansion
Marc Sandalow

Excerpt:
"IN POLITICS, AS in journalism, sometimes the facts get in the
way of the story.

"Such is the case in the matter of Gov. George W. Bush 'rewarding'
his top fund-raisers with overnight stays in his mansion across
from the state capitol in Austin.

"The Associated Press reported earlier this month that eight of
31 overnight guests at the governor's mansion helped Bush amass
a record $70 million for his presidential bid.

"The donors...accounted for a quarter of the 31 overnight
visitors that Bush entertained at the mansion since
Jan. 1, 1999, the AP reported.

"Never mind an explanation; Bush's opponents were quick to seize
upon the story as evidence of the governor's ethical weakness.

"'Clintonesque,' howled Arizona Sen. John McCain's campaign. The
senator raised the issue himself during a nationally televised
debate just before the California primary.

"Now Vice President Al Gore is running with the story. His
campaign issued a scolding statement insisting that Bush has
some explaining to do.

"Trouble is, it's not true.

"A quick look at the facts make that allegation patently absurd.

"Here is a rundown provided by the Bush campaign of the eight
guests in question:

"Craig Stapleton -- A cousin of Bush. Stapleton stayed overnight
in Austin with his wife, who is the daughter of President Bush's
sister. They have been overnight guests of the Bushes for years,
including when the Bushes lived in Dallas.

"Roland Betts -- A roommate of Bush's from Yale, and a friend for
over 30 years. Betts also stayed with Bush years ago in his less
opulent digs in Dallas.

"Jan 0'Neill -- An old friend who introduced Bush to his wife,
Laura, in 1977, and frequent guest in Bush households for years.

"Brad Freeman -- a Bush friend for 20 years, who also stayed with
Bush long before he lived in Austin.

"Don Evans -- A Bush friend for 25 years and now his top
fund-raiser. His wife and Bush attended elementary school
together.

"Jim Francis -- A friend for 30 years, and frequent weekend
companion.

"Steve Goldsmith -- The mayor of Indianapolis and Bush's chief
domestic policy adviser.

"John Engler -- The governor of Michigan and Bush adviser.

"As a writer whose livelihood thrives on political fires, it
pains me to pour water on a potential conflagration. But it is
hard to take seriously those who won't let the matter die.

"Indeed, it would be a great story if only the facts didn't get
in the way."

Nashville Tennessean
Commentary: Mr. Vice President, Don't Expect A Cakewalk Down Home
Larry Daughtrey
03/19/00

Excerpt:
"Even a yawner of an election, like the one most everyone
ignored last Tuesday, has a way of producing conversation
around the cracker barrel in Tennessee for months to come.

Tuesday, Al Gore got 196,438 votes to 188,094 for George Bush.
But a total of 244,989 Republicans voted, compared to 213,069
Democrats. That's about as close as it gets in trying to
predict an election.

"Another popular cracker barrel indicator is the bellwether
county. Carroll County, located just west of the Tennessee
River, has an uncanny ability to side with the winner in
statewide elections.

"Last week, Gore got 991 votes in Carroll County; Bush got 739.
The county produced 1017 Democratic votes, 889 Republican.
So the numbers suggest a hair-thin Gore win in his home state
in November.  But it's going to be a horse race in Tennessee.
Which shouldn't be news to anyone who has followed the fierce
party competition in a true swing state."

Voters Send a Message:
'Don't Mess With Bush;' Governor draws record turnout in Texas
for GOP primary
Sam Attlesey
03/18/00

"Austin - Maybe that popular bumper sticker that declares
'Don't Mess With Texas' should be changed.

"Given the results of the Texas primary, the new slogan could be
'Don't Mess With Bush.'

"Texas voters sent a powerful signal of just how much they like
their Gov. George W. Bush.

"Not only did the Republican primary voters put Mr. Bush over
the top in securing the delegates needed for his party's
nomination, but they also backed and helped nominate two of
his favored appointees to statewide posts - Railroad
Commissioner Michael Williams and Texas Supreme Court
Justice Al Gonzales.

"The voters also ousted Republican State Board of Education
member Bob Offutt, who had campaigned across the country against
Mr. Bush's presidential bid.

"Not only did 87 percent of the people who participated in the
GOP primary back the governor, but 16 percent of the Democratic
primary voters said they would back Bush in the general election
against Democratic Vice President Al Gore. And 29 percent of the
Democratic voters said they had a favorable opinion of Mr. Bush.
Mr. Bush's presence on the GOP ballot helped produce a record
turnout in the Republican primary of 1.14 million, breaking the
previous high of 1,019,803 set in 1996.

"Mr. Williams, a longtime friend of Mr. Bush, is virtually
assured of becoming the first black Republican to hold a
statewide office and the first black to hold a nonjudicial
statewide office. Mr. Williams, Justice Gonzales and Railroad
Commissioner Tony Garza, a confidant of the governor's and the
first Hispanic Republican to hold statewide office, are all
considered strong possibilities to  play major roles in a Bush
administration should the governor win the presidential contest.

"[Gov. Bush] reached out to the minority communities at his
victory parties in Austin the last two weeks.

"After...coast to coast wins in the March 7Super Tuesday round
of primaries, he selected black educator Phyllis Hunter to
introduce him.

"And after assuring himself of the nomination with his sweep of
Southern states last Tuesday, he chose El Paso Mayor Carlos
Ramirez to do the honors.

"For Democrats, Republicans and Independents, this is the
candidate who offers the most hope on the most important
issue - the education of our children,' said the mayor, a
self-described 'lifelong Democrat.'"
