Governor Bush passed Lawsuit Reform |
The Reforms:
Capped punitive damage awards at twice
economic damages, no more than
$750,000 in non-economic damages.
Prevented Texas from becoming a "dumping ground" for out-of-state and
foreign lawsuits.
Strengthened a judge's ability to sanction parties who bring frivolous
lawsuits.
Limited the ability of prisoners to clog Texas courts with frivolous
lawsuits.
The Results:
Texans and Texas businesses have saved nearly $3 billion through insurance
rate reductions, cases filed for non-motor vehicle related injuries and
damage have decreased over 30 percent, and the number of personal injury
cases filed as a total of all civil cases has decreased from 13 percent to
10 percent from 1994 to 1998.
